W. Matthew Pierce

Matt draws on his previous software career to represent clients in patent infringement litigation and related matters.

Matt Pierce represents clients in matters involving web, cloud, app, thick software, and other technologies, such as video coding, wireless standards, GPS devices, semiconductors, and other mechanical devices. He practices in district courts in Texas, Delaware, California, and other jurisdictions nationwide, and has drafted winning briefs in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit.

Matt has experience with standard essential patents (SEPs) and related fair, reasonable, and nondiscriminatory (FRAND) issues, both in litigation and in prelitigation license demands, for clients of all sizes. He has presented and written on multiple FRAND topics and has used his software background to develop FRAND-rate calculation tools for various technologies and clients. He also advises on personal jurisdiction and service issues, especially those involving foreign companies.

Before his legal career, Matt spent more than eight years developing software for an e-commerce and logistics supplier. He also spent four years as a clerk for judges on Colorado’s appellate courts.
